Railway and harsh environments

Customized power supplies don’t have to be more expensive!

Optimal component selection
The circuit topologies that we use ensure that all components are available from two sources of supply, wherever possible. Furthermore, the circuits are designed with the aim of using the minimum number of components, with each component having its specific place in the design. As well as increasing the lifespan of your power supply, this also makes it easier for our production department to reliably procure components. This benefit shouldn’t be underestimated, especially during periods of allocation. Data sheets only tell half the story. Our team develops the design and quickly draws up an initial 3D model, as well as a provisional product data sheet for you to evaluate. This guarantees that all specifications are taken into consideration and that the mechanical requirements correspond to what you had in mind.

We also do all of the tests in our own laboratory and implement any necessary changes prior to certification. Thanks to this process, we normally pass certification first time, without the need for any further costly and time-consuming development loops.

DC18 DISPLAY COMPUTER, DUAGON
A ROBUST SOLUTION FOR ONE OF THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST ENVIRONMENTS
Offshore drilling islands, situated kilometres from land on the open sea, are among the harshest workplaces in the world. The equipment used needs to satisfy the strictest safety standards and must be extremely reliable, which requires a power supply of the highest calibre. If there is an outage, it simply isn’t possible to get hold of a spare part quickly.
The extremely robust DC18 display computer from duagon is designed for applications in the mineral oil industry. It offers IoT networked data management and analytics via a 12.1 inch display. With a robust, capacitive touchscreen and IP66 housing, it is suitable for indoor and outdoor use in potentially explosive atmospheres of Class I, Area 2 and Zone 2. “In order to guarantee a high degree of reliability, the decision was taken at the start of the design phase to implement a power supply that was specially customized to meet the requirements of the DC18”, says Bryan Miller, Product Solution Manager.
“The team from Traco Power has developed an exceptionally reliable power supply for us that can withstand extreme vibrations, shocks and fluctuations in temperature. Furthermore, for the robust touchscreen to function correctly, special consideration had to be given to electromagnetic compatibility. The technical insights that we gained during the development phase, together with the proactive support, were an important element in the successful market launch of our product.”
PARTICLE ACCELERATOR, DESY
RELIABLE POWER SUPPLY FOR CUTTING EDGE RESEARCH
Walking 3.3 km along a particle accelerator at 2.00 am to replace a defective component isn’t how DESY engineers would prefer to spend their time and it causes frustration among the scientists who carry out experiments at the end of the “tube”. It was therefore clear at the very start of the project that the reliability of the power supply had to be high up on the list of requirements. However, this was just one of several key properties on the specifications list.
The definitive solution was based on an existing compact 24 V / 240 W power supply that required a series of modifications to match the requirements of the application. Perhaps the most critical requirement was the CE certification of the application into which the power supplies are integrated. Furthermore, availability had to be guaranteed over a period of ten years.
We implemented a redundant system with two power supplies per module, in order to guarantee reliable power supply to all sections of the accelerator, explains Carsten Müller, Laboratory Manager and Plant Technician.
It was critical for us that our partner in this project was able to fulfil our individual needs, especially with regard to the modifications and CE certification. Availability throughout the lengthy duration of this project and the rapid delivery of spare parts for this individualized product were of inestimable importance.
