About

Traco Power as a partner

Technical support and project planning is provided by our German and Swiss project managers and sales engineers. This is done either online, at your site or even at our branches in Switzerland (Zug) or Germany (Munich). Development and quality assurance take place in our state-of-the-art research and development centres with modern test laboratories in Ireland (Cork and Wexford).

Our team

Our human resources strategy is based on combining experience and innovation. Many of our staff have been working for Traco Power for decades and are familiar with practically every power supply challenge. By contrast, young “wild” developers are even better at having their finger on the pulse and deliver innovative approaches. Together with well-coordinated quality and logistics teams, this combination has proven to be extremely successful. Traco Power works closely together with power electronics chairs of renowned universities. Together they test and examine the marketability of new topologies, components and layouts.

MARK SCHOPPEL, Dipl.-Ing. / Project Manager, Individualized Power Supplies

“I have been working as a project engineer for individualized power supplies at Traco Power for a few years. When it comes to supporting customers while developing individualized solutions, I can count on the wealth of experience that our team has built up over decades. We have access to a vast amount of proven technical concepts and circuit developments that help us to rise to our customers’ tricky challenges. This, along with my many years of experience in hardware design, enables us to consider each project as a whole – from the overarching requirements to the smallest technical details.

I like how straightforward, uncomplicated and cooperative work is at Traco Power, across all of the sites. I see this as being one of the key factors in our success, because it enables efficient dialogue about design requirements and development status. This all contributes to creating power solutions that satisfy my customers’ requirements from the very beginning.” – M. Schoppel

JEFF COOPER, Dipl.-Ing. / Head of Quality

“I’m passionate about quality. I have worked as a Quality Assurance Manager at Traco Power for over 20 years. My studies culminating in a degree in electronics and electrical engineering have given me the specialist knowledge I need to manage the QA team and its activities. As a primary point of contact for customers regarding all aspects of quality, we take care of quality problems as a team and make use of the findings we have made in Traco Power’s Continuous Improvement Program. I am especially proud of the development of our automated testing solutions – the result of more than two years of work. This is particularly important in the context of individualized power solutions because they require dedicated testing methods to ensure their conformity with the agreed specifications. I am proud of how much the business as a whole focuses on exceeding customers’ expectations and consistently guaranteeing quality from start to finish. Our close cooperation within the business, from the design and development team to our production partners, provides the basis for this.” – Jeff Cooper

History

  • The 1940s

    When the success story began

The success story began in the 1940s. Traco Power Group was founded by Mr Hans Caspar in 1944. The first business was Traco Trading Company Limited. During the 1940s, Traco Trading Co. Ltd. was involved in the import and distribution of cameras, radios and electronic components. They were mainly imported from Japan, America and Italy and placed on the specialist electronics market by the company’s own representatives.

  • The 1950s

Internationalisation begins with Dynavox / Revox

In around 1946 Hans Caspar imported some of the world’s first tape recorders. They were specially developed for the American market by Bush Development as the successor to the BK 40 dictaphone. However, these devices were not a success because their susceptibility to interference and the fact that they were designed for 110 volts at 60 Hz made them unsuitable for the Swiss market. The devices were stored in Mr Caspar’s basement until 1949, when Mr Ernst M. Egli got in touch with Willi Studer. He was commissioned with converting the Soundmirror tape recorders for the Swiss market. However, Willi Studer decided to produce his own tape recorder and to give it a better design from scratch.

  • The 1970s

The birth of complex power supplies and DC-DC converters

Traco Trading Co. Ltd. exclusively distributed the devices under the name Dynavox, which made the business so successful that the Traco Electronic Company Limited department was founded in the 1970s for its own developments.

This step is still considered to be a milestone in the current group of companies. Traco Electronic Co. Ltd., also known as TRACO, began to focus on complex power supplies and DC/DC converters and established itself as one of the market leaders in this segment.

  • 1980 – 2000

    International expansion

This focus was intensified with Convertec Ltd, now Traco Power Solutions Ltd, in Wexford, Ireland. With around 40 employees, Traco Power Solutions Ltd. is managed by Luis de Sousa.

Comptek Elektronik GmbH has its headquarters in Ismaning, Germany, where it was founded in 1989. The name of the company was changed to Traco Electronic GmbH in 2000, when it employed around 20 staff.

  • 2013

    More space was required

In 2013, Traco Electronic Co. Ltd. moved its headquarters from Zürich to Baar in the Canton of Zug (Switzerland). In 2016, Rolf Caspar, grandson of the founder, handed over operational management of Traco Power Group to Markus Dalla Monta (CEO) and Adrian Berger (CFO) after 17 years and has focused on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors since then.

  • 2016 – present

Further growth with more international expansion

Traco Power North America, Inc. was also founded in San Jose (USA) in 2016. Two years later (2018) a subsidiary under the name of Traco Power France was opened in Paris, with more local Traco Power subsidiaries to follow.
